All aboard! Train depart...
When, in 1905, in the town of Thames Haven in the southeast of England, the local branch of the railway decided, due to unprofitability, to stop transporting passengers between the city and the port, local craftsmen came up with the idea of using ... a sail instead of a steam locomotive. The winds constantly blowing in those parts from the English Channel accelerated the sailing trolley up to 20 or even up to 25 miles per hour. This sailing trolley worked properly until the end of the 20s of the last century. During the operation, not a single accident and, moreover, an accident was recorded. Another use case for a sailon the railroad - the Spurn Point peninsula in Yorkshire. This narrow deserted spit, which protrudes into the sea for almost five kilometers, has always been a haven for many sea birds. And here, since the beginning of the last century, many people have come to admire the birds. For the convenience of ladies and gentlemen, a narrow-gauge railway was laid on the spit, but the train scared away the birds, so sails were also fitted to the railway carts. The attraction functioned until the Second World War.
Still, Britain is a great maritime nation ...))) Source
