neofouling
What is anti-fouling and why is it needed or why do sailboatsmen return from the sailboat club in the spring dirty (but often happy)? ))
Any hull that has been in the water for a long time attracts various small animals, which begin to consider it their home) In just 1-2 months, shells begin to appear on the underwater sides of the sailboat, and if the sailboat has been in the water for a year without cleaning, then it is more like to a large floating island.
What does it interfere with? In principle, nothing, except for the fact that the speed of the sailboat will fall in proportion to the degree of fouling. This is most critical for racers, however, it is also unpleasant for cruisers, because. with an overgrown hull, sailing will require more time and fuel.
In order not to dive overboard with a scraper every month and not to scrub the underwater sides, antifouling paint was invented.
There are 2 main types of antifouling:
1. Poisonous. This type was widely used in the CIS countries, because. it is cheap, but also toxic. Living creatures do not take root on it because the surface treated with such antifouling is not suitable for it.
2. Non-poisonous or peeling. This type of antifouling is widespread in Europe and gradually comes to Ukraine. The point is that such antifouling has a weak adhesion between its layers and when some shell clings to the surface with antifouling, it peels off into one layer from the area where this shell is fixed. Because There are many layers, this is enough for a couple of years of operation. Such antifouling is divided into different types depending on the speed of the vessel. The higher the speed, the more must be connected.i.e. between layers so that all the antifouling does not peel off in the first months of sailing.
I use the second type of antifouling and while it is wet it is very easily soiled - it is worth touching the underwater part of the side with your hand and the hand is painted. True, it is also easy to wash off this paint from your hands.
About stainless steel in water. Unprotected stainless steel is also overgrown, for example, if we are talking about a stern tube in which the propeller shaft rotates. That. Stainless pipes also need to be protected with antifouling, while practice shows that antifouling adheres better to stainless steel without a primer.
Finally, a funny video of how it happens - applying antifouling
