The device of the wall line of a small size vessel
1 - propeller; 2 - bracket; 3 - rubber-metal bushing (Goodrich bushing); 4 - propeller shaft; 5 - stuffing box
Hello!
In this article, I will describe how the small boat line is arranged and, separately, what are the additional requirements from the electric motor to the line.
When one or another internal combustion engine is on the ship, no one considers the loss of efficiency due to friction and the like. If the screw is spinning, then usually everyone is happy with everything.
With electricity, the situation is different. Here we save those crumbs of energy that are in the battery, which means that the valoline should work like clockwork, spinning with almost two fingers. This is achieved by proper deadwood construction, namely:
The connection of the electric motor shaft and the propeller shaft in a wooden case is difficult to make absolutely accurate so that there is no beating and breaking of this connection, therefore it is advisable to use a cam elastic sleeve :
Due to the rubber central part, it removes minor errors in the alignment of the shafts. Without it, vibrations will quickly destroy the bearings of the electric motor.
Next comes thrust bearing , its task is to prevent the shaft from sliding in and out of the ship's hull under the action of the pushing force of the propeller. There should be no pressure on the motor shaft from the side of the propeller shaft, this pressure should be taken by the thrust bearing.
Next comes the stuffing box , on my boat it is a stuffed type. It consists of a special graphite cord that wraps around the shaft lengthwise in several layers. Its task is to prevent water from getting inside the vessel through the gap between the propeller shaft and the stern tube (the propeller shaft rotates in it)
After the stuffing box there is a pipe for water to enter the stern tube. Water will be supplied through this pipe, which will lubricate and cool the shaft.
Further, the stern tube passes through the hull of the vessel and at its end, where the shaft goes out and connects to the propeller, there is a Goodrich bushing . I tried to put instead of it a plastic bushing and a bronze one - all this does not work. Plastic breaks very quickly, and bronze heats up, expands and wedges the shaft after 5 minutes of operation. Only the Goodrich sleeve is suitable, it is designed to work in water, it is also cooled and lubricated by it. Newans: Goodrich bushings are most often found under a 30mm shaft. The diameter of the stern tube must be at least 45mm, althoughI saw somewhere on the Internet that there is Goodrich and under 40mm pipe diameter.
Indirectly, this section includes the choice of the type of screw. For an electric motor on a sailboat, I recommend putting a folding propeller , not a regular one. If you are hoping to charge your batteries from the rotation of the propeller with the oncoming flow of water while sailing, you will be disappointed. This will give very little energy, at best, you should hope for 100-200 watts. This is extremely small. You will gain more from speed when sailing with folded propeller blades than you will store energy from the rotation of a conventional propeller.
It is very important that the stern tube is strictly straight. On my boat, due to welding of a pipe with a flange plate, with which the pipe is attached to the hull at the exit from it, the pipe was bent and this led to poor alignment of the shaft in the pipe, as a result, the shaft rubs against the metal of the pipe. My task for the winter is to eliminate.
